Respond Architects teamed up with David Reid Homes Central and West to design this bespoke new home in the heritage suburb of Mt Eden
Nestled in the rear of a subdivided site, tucked away behind a Mt Eden Villa, is this small but perfectly formed home. Designed to create a private, low-maintenance haven for its owners, maximising views of the Waitakere Ranges, this project was years in the making, facing a complicated Resource Consenting process (due to the Heritage overlay on the site), and the challenges of construction during COVID lockdowns. The result was worth waiting for though – the floor plan arrangement is rigorous, with no wasted space and flexibility built in. Designed to accommodate its owners into old age, accessibility is integral to the design, with a lift, level thresholds, wide hallways and doors, and wheelchair accessible bathrooms. The landscape design is fully considered as part of the architecture, with the yard maximised to include covered outdoor seating and dining spaces, a hot tub, vegetable and ornamental gardens, and a small lawn space for grandchildren to play – all flowing off the main living space.
